Madrid 1883
SINCE 1883 Born as "Economic Coffee" What happens to be the most traditional churrería in Madrid began its journey at the end of the 19th century on Calle del Espíritu Santo, in the neighborhood then known as the Maravillas neighborhood, today Malasaña
...The founder of the establishment, Ángel Huertas Sánchez, opened in 1883 what was then known as "economic coffee"; He dispatched, in addition to fritters, churros, batons, hot chocolate, hot and cold milk and also coffee and milk of his own making; In addition, he distributed his products first thing in the morning in different street stalls in the area. During the Civil War, the scarcity of raw materials made it necessary to close the cafe and maintain exclusively the activity of distributing porras and churros, first through the streets of the center, also in stalls, and then to bars and cafes. Later, in the forties, the buñoleria passed into the hands of Ángel Huertas Rodríguez, son of the original owner, and in the eighties the Huertas family passed on the churrería to other veterans of the business, the Mendoza Manzano family (Carlos and Teresa ), which already had similar businesses in different parts of the capital. Today, the fourth generation of this family of churreros is at the forefront of the business, creating handmade fried doughs with the same recipe of yesteryear. With a certain nostalgia for a perhaps friendlier past, Madrid 1883 has reformed its establishment to create a space that, offering all the comforts of the present, recovers the old flavor of the cafes of a lifetime.
