Botería Julio Rodríguez
Botería Julio Rodríguez
This boat shop dates from 1909, opened by Álvaro Fernández on Calle del Águila, in the La Latina neighborhood, with Anastasio Rodríguez, grandfather of the current boat owner, as an apprentice
...SINCE 1909 Wineskins, boots, skins or leather skins Wineskins, boots, skins or leather: Julio Rodríguez, current owner of the botería, proudly reels off the synonyms to name the different goatskin leathers, ready to preserve oil and wine, which hang from the walls of his workshop and that he manufactures by hand. Both work together until 1941, the date on which Álvaro Fernández leaves the business and Anastasio requests its acquisition to continue with the trade. In the seventies, Julio Rodríguez decides to take over the family business to continue his grandfather's artisanal boat tradition to the present: he himself cuts the skins with his metal templates, sews them and dries them; then prepare and apply the pitch with which it waterproofs the interior of the leathers. The mouthpiece or curb will be the last thing you put on before the boot is ready to be cured. The boots are, without a doubt, the star product in sales of the botería, with almost a thousand units sold a year, although it also manufactures skins and sells American oak barrels. Artisanal products with an old flavor that are still current thanks to the work of the only bottle shop that is still active today in Madrid.
