Tobacco Plaza del Ángel
Tobacco Plaza del Ángel
SINCE 1892 Probably the oldest in Madrid This tobacconist's shop in the Barrio de las Letras, located next to the Church of San Sebastián and built on the same location as an old convent, is probably the oldest in Madrid.
...Although it seems that the founder's family had already been dedicating themselves to the sale of tobacco for years, its original owner, Eusebio de Lecanda, opened it as a tobacco "expenduría" in 1892, as the legal concessionaire of the recently created state monopoly of this type of product. During the following years, in addition to selling items related to tobacco, he dedicated the premises to the sale of glass, china, and even offered shoe-cleaning services, for which he obtained a license in 1925. With a very different from that of the modern tobacconists of today, not only because of its wooden front and its classic interior, but also because the tobacconist has a cave on the lower floor, conditioned for the perfect conservation of cigars and other tobaccos at a temperature several degrees below that of the surface. It is one of the many caves and passageways that existed in the past in the subsoil of the Plaza del Ángel, and which have been disappearing with successive urban remodeling. Over the years, this establishment has been run by different generations of the same family: the previous owner of the business, Alberto Samper de Lecanda, was the grandson of the founder. Currently, his son Alberto Samper Paredes has taken over this almost legendary Expendeduría number 99.
