Cow Widow
Cow Widow
SINCE 1887 A traditional venue in the Viuda de Vacas neighborhood of inns and sales has its origins in 1887, when Antonio Gabino Butragueño opened the doors of a wine shop and inn at number 19 Cava Alta street, which would change in the thirties to Current number 23
...It was a traditional place in the neighborhood of inns and sales, with its own stables. In 1941, Segundo Vacas, grandfather of the current owners, acquired the establishment. The current business comes from what was always the tavern of the Posada de San Antonio until Segundo Vacas died in 1946, when his widow Victoria Sastre took over the establishment and it was renamed “Widow of Vacas”. The place was open to the public throughout the day, and between meals they played dominoes and cards. From its creation and until the reform carried out in 2006, they used the coal kitchen and the family decoration, with a tin counter and Talavera tiles. Its specialty is traditional cuisine. The business has been run by the Vacas family since the 1940s, except during the time it was run by the De Francisco-Gómez family. Starting in the 1970s, three of the founders' grandchildren took over the business, although at present only two of them continue to run it. In 2006, and due to the rehabilitation of the original building, they were moved to their current location on calle del Águila, number 2.
