In a joint effort to raise awareness in society about the situation of refugees, the Spanish Commission for Refugee Assistance (CEAR), the Madrid City Council and Mercados de Madrid have launched the "Mercados de Madrid" recipe book. This solidarity project, under the initiative "Welcome a Plate: because recipes do not understand borders", was presented on Monday, June 10 at 12:00 p.m. at the Peace Market.
The recipe book, which seeks to promote the inclusion of refugees through gastronomy, consists of 24 recipes , 30 illustrations by artist Mariano Martín and 6 moving personal stories . The publication not only offers a variety of dishes, but also reflects the experiences and cultures of those who have been forced to leave their countries fleeing war and persecution.
The event was attended by prominent personalities, including Concepción Díaz de Villegas, General Director of Commerce, Hospitality and Consumer Affairs of the Madrid City Council; Mauricio Valiente, director of CEAR; and Mariano Martín, illustrator and architect of the project. In addition, some of the refugees who have contributed their recipes will attend, such as Patricia Vargas, Lakook's cook, who will share her testimony with the attendees.
During the presentation, a tasting of three recipes included in the cookbook was offered, allowing those present to enjoy a unique culinary experience. Patricia Vargas performed a live cooking show, showing the richness and diversity of gastronomy that refugees contribute to the community.
This recipe book is an artistic and gastronomic manifestation that seeks to connect Madrid society with the stories and cultures of refugees . Through "Mercados de Madrid", CEAR and the Madrid City Council invite everyone to discover and enjoy recipes that transcend borders and unite hearts.
