Casa Alberto Tavern Restaurant
Casa Alberto, founded in 1827 in the same place where Miguel de Cervantes lived and wrote two of his masterpieces, the second part of “Don Quixote” and “The Works of Persiles and Segismunda”, is a centuries-old tavern, full of memories
...(its zinc booklet, the beautiful onyx and wood bar, its bottle rack, its Seltz water manufacturing pressure gauge, its old and valued tap, the cash register,...) literary, theatrical and bullfighting remembrances, where you can taste excellent traditional Madrid cuisine
The tavern was run by Segovians, who successively ran the business among family members and acquaintances. The Sanz, Pesquera and de Dios families came from the north of Segovia. At the end of the 19th century, cafes and theaters were very dynamic in Madrid. Street musicians, ragpickers and florists abounded. Many Madrid residents who visited the Prado Museum (it was officially created in 1819) later went to have a drink in the neighborhood.
In 1924 the tavern enjoyed several years of splendor. “Chic” people, walkers and office workers enjoyed the new and varied tapas, such as herring or dried cod. Vermouth gradually made its way among Madrid residents as the aperitif drink; The most common drink was Valdepeñas wine, which came in cow skins. Later, seafood and fish could be served thanks to the railway that brought it fresh to Madrid: stewed clams, oysters, cooked crabs, anchovies, shrimp...
The vicissitudes of a century-old tavern like Casa Alberto have gone hand in hand with the passage of time. But there is a constant concern in the different tavern owners who have run it: maintaining the flavor and a certain traditionalism of Madrid, adapting to the possibilities and demands of the clients.
In summary, Casa Alberto is a centuries-old tavern, full of literary, theatrical and bullfighting remembrances, where you can taste excellent traditional Madrid cuisine.
