The market of the Plaza Mayor
The Mercado de San Miguel is an example of the monumental works of iron and glass that have become popular throughout the world since the mid-19th century
...
Located next to the Plaza Mayor in Madrid, it was initially an open-air market, dedicated to the sale of fish. He is quoted in June 1835 in the Madrid Newspaper, directed by Mesonero Romanos, in reference to the possible construction of various markets. The works to convert it into a covered market, directed by the architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez, began in 1913 and concluded three years later, in 1916. The most advanced techniques of the time were used to ensure the solidity of the structure and also the health and the insulation of the interior: cast iron beams as support and joists of the same material to assemble the roof, which also had shutters to ensure constant air circulation, partitions to separate the stalls, platform with ventilation spaces, and an underground floor intended for storage. The second great transformation of the market came with the 21st century.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in December 2000 and after six years of work, the new San Miguel Market reopened its doors to the public in 2009, becoming a cutting-edge market, full of users and tourists eager not only to share the myriad of products offered, but to contemplate a historical space listening to echoes of the stalls of the past in a work of art ready to cross this new century with a firm step.
