STREET'24 EXIT GUN SHOT!

(URBAN ART MUSEUM FROM APRIL 8 TO MAY 5)

The contest starts! , you can now see the finished works of the invited artists of CALLE'24 and also enjoy the creation of the interventions in competition of the 52 participating artists in 52 facades and shop windows of our businessmen, hoteliers and merchants of Lavapiés.

The guest artist Basket of Nean, a great reference of Street Art in Madrid, has given the starting signal, out of competition, with the prestigious Alhambra Work titled “LA FUENTE DE LAVAPIÉS” . The work, inspired by the history of the Central Fountain of Lavapiés, is the largest created by the enigmatic artist to date and has been executed in secret to protect his anonymity and we have discovered it on the façade of La Tiendina on the street Argumosa Salitre corner.

The guests of honor, our elders, have participated with their work “DEJANDO HUELLA”, more personal and human than ever since on this occasion they have lent their own bodies to create molds of their faces, their hands and their feet to pay tribute to the origins of our neighborhood and our people, a tribute to our history and emphasizing the human factor as the essence of the identity of Lavapiés .

In this 11th edition we will enjoy the works of renowned artists such as Pezones Revueltos, Dante Arcade, Sr Gotta or Zai, among others.

The selection of proposals has focused on finding different artistic disciplines and the integration of the work in businesses, betting on the heterogeneity and identity of the neighborhood.

Among the different works that can be seen in CALLE we find painting on glass, as in the case of Aida Poppy, Alain Skinny or Soga 303; of collage murals, such as the creations of the Casa en Llamas Collective or Rafa Álvarez; interventions such as those of Esenci_al_; and, as could not be missed, painting on the façade, with artists such as Soem, Leyvel, Pyramid, Yeye Torres or Unpatrus.

This year the bar is very high for the works in competition that will compete for the coveted prizes that have increased their amount this year:

Jury Prize awarded by an independent jury, which will award a prize of €2,000 + 30 cans of Montana Colors spray paint to the chosen intervention.

Alhambra Prize , which will be awarded to the CALLE artist. 2022 most valued through a jury appointed by Cervezas Alhambra. The prize will be €1,200 + 30 cans of Montana Colors spray paint .

Public Prize , which will be awarded to the most valued intervention through CALLE. social networks, and will be endowed with €800 + 30 cans of Montana Colors spray paint .

We give you a few glimpses of what we will see this year...

FRAGMENTS

Dante Arcade in his work refers to the reflection of the mind of man confronted with the digital mind of the internet and AI. Generating a collage composition through different random images forming a new collage style compassion. In this way achieving a new interpretation of art through man accompanied by the mind of the machine. His work can be seen at Casa Soria.

LAST SUPPER

This is the name of the first Pezones Revueltos mural in the El Economico establishment. A renewed image of the Last Supper, where different very varied characters enjoy socializing while eating, the plates at the bottom of the mural. It refers to female meetings that serve as an outlet to share our experiences and those “girl things,” a concept used socially for many years in a negative way to refer to everything feminine.

THE SOCIAL ELEVATOR

The work of Juan Carlos Escobar aims to establish a point of criticism, arising from the heart of the problem. To do this, we are located in a humble neighborhood like Lavapiés. A place that has ended up becoming an area where not everyone can afford to live. The piece proposes dialogue and reflection with the viewer through abstraction and visual codes that seek to impact. Where art provides reality and criticism, in the face of an increasingly extreme division of the social class (landlords and tenants). In Madrid, having or not having a home can mean having economic freedom or being practically expelled from the city. All this is transmitted with an avant-garde aesthetic, where abstract shapes and textures refer us to urban art. The work is impregnated with the gray of the city and does so using artistic techniques that come from the same street language: such as tags, the use of spray or the roller. This mural can be enjoyed in Acebedo.

YELLOW AFTERNOONS AND COOL MORNINGS

This work created by Raquel Coba for Tasca Barea speaks of memories and nostalgia. She uses this text adapted from the book Canto yo y la montana baila to refer to and describe her work; You remember when you were little, or the day he died, or all the mornings afterwards, or you think about your mother, or you look at what is in front of you, the night, the flowers, the neighborhood, and inspiration comes and fills the cheeks and nose with a joy of sweet wine.

LOCAL BRIGHTNESS

Tez Mei x P4lchu with spray paint technique; and taking into account color and strokes to generate emotion, they represent with shapes, scratches, stains, figuration and abstraction the mixed, striking and multicultural character of Lavapiés. Taking into account the location chosen as a point, La Playa de Lavapiés.

WALKING STREET

This work created by Zai contains a nocturnal background that degrades, becoming a story through a bucket of paint, the work includes his iconic characters El Gato Nocturno & Retro Cats, a family of cats that is in constant physical change and evolution, Each color of the felines symbolizes a state of mind apart from an ability, adapting on this occasion to the Acevedo trade where each cat with its respective color and abilities will represent objects and materials of the business.

BE REBORN

Daniel Jon will be the creator of this piece which portrays naked women, each one with a hood that symbolizes the fear and darkness that surrounds the victim. His work will be exhibited and designed for the Zhervo establishment.

REAL RELATIONSHIPS

Ane OA 's intervention in the columns of the San Fernando Market speaks of interpersonal relationships in society and the difficult connection between people and the need for it.

CURIOSITY TO TAKE

The work “Curiosity to take away” created by Inopia in La Cuchara. It uses Inopias made with spray and brush as the main element, which deal with characteristic symbols of the trade such as the large central spoon, a stew in progress or food packages, referring to elements of the business without fully showing what they can find in it, thus warming the viewer's curiosity.
The Inopias that transport food to your home complement the message of the business's sign while offering presence to the delivery people. The element of the cable box on the façade is used to simulate large packages of food, as well as the light projected by the real spotlight, which will compose volume by generating shadows at different points, thus generating contrast with the white of the Inopias that revives warm colors (hot food without leaving home) on a soft light brown base, accompanied by lines as a decorative and shading element along with other Inopias that, as in the rest of his art, the artist will improvise during the creative process.

The Festival of Artistic Interventions of Lavapiés CALLE, was presented this year at the International Contemporary Art Fair JUSTMAD , which has included it for the first time in its program, reaching its 11th edition, from April 8 to May 5 , with more enthusiasm than ever taking a giant step by launching a new art curatorship: La Panartería gets on board to definitively promote this festival that was born with the spirit of strengthening small businesses and the life of our beloved and traditional neighborhood of Lavapiés, thanks to the initiative of the Association of Merchants and Businessmen of Lavapiés, and Cervezas Alhambra which, like every year, supports and rewards this contest. Also joining this year is Montana Colors , a leading brand in spray paints, supporting our artists and with some surprises.

In this edition, the promotional poster is by the artist Nataline Pomar , master of color, positivism and fun, with her organic forms full of life.

An explosion of art, emotion, color, sensations, and many “Ooooooooohs”, which this year we will collect more than ever.

ABOUT NEAN

Born in the 80s, 70s or 60s, Nean began in urban art with stickers until he evolved his icon, a basketball basket, into the pixel, thus allowing him to use the mosaic technique. He is inspired by everyday elements for his pieces, as well as other works of art or the urban environment itself to adapt the work itself to the space and, in this way, make more sense.

He has worked with numerous galleries both nationally and internationally in recent years, and has participated in renowned art fairs such as UVNT Art Fair (2022), ESTAMPA (2023) and JUSTMAD (2024) in which he will participate this year with the La Panartería gallery.

However, he does not want to confine himself exclusively to galleries, since he values pure urban art much more, which is why all his works are previously placed on the street, these being the original and primary ones. In this way, it connects both spaces, and forces the viewer to explore the city in search of said work or other additional ones.

ABOUT JUSTMAD

JUSTMAD in its fifteenth edition continues with the firm mission of publicizing new gallery projects, in addition to having the presence of artists who currently lead the contemporary art scene.

A fair that is defined as a “discovery space” proving to be an effective locator of new values and projects . With the clear challenge of continuing to be a space for learning, support and a springboard for galleries and artists.

ABOUT THE PANARTERY

Blanca León and María Heredia are the founders and directors of the La Panartería art gallery, a gallery located in the heart of Lavapiés. Specialized in the field of Performing Arts and Cultural Management and Production, they decide to create La Panarteria with the aim of being a reference space that generates synergies and dialogues between different artistic expressions, Street Art and figurative art being the main ones.

WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM?

The space where the gallery is located was Felisa and Miguel's Lavapiés bakery, which was founded in the 60s and was active until the 90s. They were Blanca's grandparents and it seemed very important to us to honor the establishments in the neighborhood that they had inhabited and occupied an important part in its history. We also wanted it to be a name that invited entry and generated curiosity. Our motto finally was “Amassing ideas.”

CALLE is a springboard to disseminate and meet emerging artists in our artistic scene and that is a novelty this year that we believe can enrich the festival and give more support to the artists.

Cervezas Alhambra maintains a firm commitment to culture through sponsorship of the 11th edition of CALLE, another example of the support that the brewery provides to the art and craft sector, betting on creation, tradition and respect for processes creative in all the activities it promotes. The brand sponsors this edition by awarding the Alhambra Prize for another year, a recognition of urban art that will be designated by a jury of Cervezas Alhambra, giving the winning artist a prize of €1,200 . www.cervezasalhambra.com/es

Montana Colors , with its 30 years of history, has been a key player in the world of graffiti and urban art. Its evolution from its founding in 1994 to the current innovative products that make up the brand's offering has marked a before and after in the way urban writers and artists create and express themselves. Beyond being an aerosol brand, Montana Colors is a basic pillar of urban culture, a catalyst for creativity, collaborating with artists and contributing to the cultural fabric of various communities throughout the planet. The Association of Merchants and Businessmen of Lavapiés The Association of Merchants and Businessmen of Lavapiés launched this initiative with the aim of promoting artistic creation in the neighborhood in an open and participatory way and to contribute to its enjoyment in a close and daily way. . The association was born in 2005, with the intention of contributing to the development of the Lavapiés neighborhood with its project “Lavapiés en Positivo” dedicated to improving coexistence, social peace and the quality of life of the neighborhood for which it has the support of the Madrid City Council.
