SINCE 1882 The Guild of Sixth Class Wine Stores The origins of La Viña can be traced back to 1882, the date on which a trade association was created under the name of "Association of Sixth Class Wine Stores", created to ensure the industry interests
...La Unión, a Madrid newspaper of the time, referred to the guild in a humorous tone, wondering “What will sixth class wines be like, when first class ones can hardly be drunk!”. The sixth class was not about wine, of course, but about shops, and included, among many other activities, those of the tavern keepers. In 1897 the association became the “La Viña” Philanthropic and Industrial Society; industrial because it continued its task of defending the associates, and philanthropic because it compensated the family of its associates when one of them died. In 1944, the Philanthropic and Industrial Society "La Viña" was transformed by law into a mutual society, with the name of Philanthropic and Mutual Aid Society "La Viña", establishing its headquarters on Colmenares street; Its barely a thousand initial members would soon become more than two thousand. In the 1970s, the company would bring together more than eight thousand businessmen. In 1966, the company's headquarters moved to Plaza de Matute, a location where it remained for more than 50 years, until 2007, when it moved to Paseo de Santa María de la Cabeza, where it continues today as the largest association of Hospitality of the Community of Madrid.
