THE MAPFRE FOUNDATION PRESENTS TWO FASCINATING EXHIBITIONS IN MADRID: "1924. OTHER SURREALISMS" AND THE SAKIKO NOMURA RETROSPECTIVE
2025/02/10

The Mapfre Foundation, located in the heart of Madrid, has inaugurated two impressive exhibitions this Tuesday that promise to captivate art lovers: 1924. Other Surrealisms and Tender is the Night by the Japanese artist Sakiko Nomura. Both exhibitions, which will be open to the public from this Thursday, February 6th until May 11th , explore different aspects of surrealism and contemporary artistic creation, and can be enjoyed at the foundation's headquarters, at Paseo de Recoletos, number 23.

The presentation of these exhibitions brought together personalities from the art world, such as the curator of 1924. Other Surrealisms , Estrella de Diego, the curator of the Sakiko Nomura exhibition, Enrique Juncosa, and the Japanese artist herself, who is celebrating her first major retrospective in Spain with this exhibition. Also present was Nadia Arroyo, director of Culture at the Mapfre Foundation, who highlighted the relevance of both projects in the current cultural panorama.

1924. Other surrealisms: A journey to the roots of surrealism

The exhibition 1924. Other Surrealisms offers a fascinating journey through the history of surrealism, analysing various interpretations and approaches to the movement beyond the postulates of André Breton. Comprising 200 works by renowned artists, the exhibition is structured into three thematic blocks that address the major themes of surrealism: dreams, desire, psychic automatism, relationships with nature, and alchemy, among others.

Among the most notable pieces are Salvador Dalí's The Aphrodisiac Telephone (1938), Joan Miró's Dog Barking at the Moon (1926), and Marcel Jean's Surrealist Wardrobe (1941). The exhibition also includes works by artists less known to the general public, such as Maruja Mallo, with her oil painting El maho/Pim Pam Pum (1926), or creations by Nicolás de Lekuna, Amparo Segarra and José Alemany, which enrich the vision of surrealism and its evolution.

Tender is the Night: Sakiko Nomura's first major retrospective in Spain

On the other hand, Tender is the Night offers an in-depth look at the work of Sakiko Nomura, one of the most prominent artists on the contemporary Japanese scene. This is the first time that her work has been presented in a retrospective of such magnitude in Spain, making this exhibition a unique event for lovers of contemporary art. Nomura's work, with its delicate and poetic visual elements, invites us to reflect on nature, intimacy and the passage of time, fusing traditional techniques with a sensitivity typical of contemporary Japanese culture.

A double journey through history and the avant-garde

With the opening of these two exhibitions, the Mapfre Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the dissemination of major international artistic trends, offering the Madrid public a unique opportunity to explore both the roots of surrealism and the creativity of one of the leading figures of contemporary Japanese art. Both exhibitions can be visited from Monday to Sunday at the foundation's headquarters, located at Paseo de Recoletos, number 23, in Madrid.

Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in a unique artistic journey, which spans from the beginnings of surrealism to the most contemporary proposals of a Japanese artist who is conquering the art world.
