The Madrid City Council reaffirmed its commitment to the hospitality sector on the occasion of the Day of Saint Martha of Bethany, patron saint of the hospitality industry. The Delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Finance, Engracia Hidalgo, attended the traditional floral offering held on July 29th at the Santa Cruz Parish Church on Atocha Street to recognize the work of the thousands of professionals who make hospitality one of the defining characteristics of the capital.
During the meeting, which she attended alongside institutional and industry representatives, Hidalgo highlighted the work the City Council is carrying out through the 2025-2027 Commerce and Hospitality Strategy. This strategy promotes measures for promotion, innovation, digitalization, training, and financial support aimed at businesses and professionals. The City Council also maintains close collaboration with Hostelería Madrid, the region's leading hospitality business association, to develop initiatives that strengthen the competitiveness, quality, and visibility of Madrid's hospitality sector.
The hospitality industry is a key sector for Madrid: over 150,000 people work in the city's food service industry, and there are approximately 27,800 establishments dedicated to restaurants and accommodation. Beyond its impact on employment and the economy, gastronomy has become one of the main reasons why visitors choose Madrid as a tourist destination, reinforcing the capital's international profile.
Saint Martha of Bethany is considered the patron saint of innkeepers, waiters, cooks, and hoteliers because she embodies the values of hospitality, customer service, hard work, and a dedication to service. Her feast day provided an opportunity to recognize the daily work of the professionals who sustain one of the most important sectors of the Madrid economy.
