We are going to detail the 2024 opera program at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
THE MASTER SINGERS OF NUREMBERG, RICHARD WAGNER
From April 24 to May 25, the production of The Maestros Cantors at the Teatro Real is a musical milestone after 22 years, with Pablo Heras-Casado as director and outstanding voices such as Gerald Finley and Jongmin Park. The opera addresses themes such as tradition versus innovation, creative freedom and true love, with a political dimension that reflects German national unity in a turbulent time. Its contrast with other Wagnerian works stands out, being a reflection on art as tradition and transformative force. Laurent Pelly, known for his comedic skill, offers an original vision of the work in his debut opposite Wagner.
TENORIO, TOMÁS MARCO
From May 13 to May 19, Tomás Marco's Tenorio score will make its stage debut at the Teatro Real, fusing Zorrilla's Don Juan Tenorio with contributions from Tirso de Molina, Molière, Lord Byron and others. The libretto, reminiscent of Da Ponte's verses for Don Giovanni, reinterprets literary classics as a continuation of the style of the author's previous works. Written between 2008 and 2009 for the Estío Musical Burgalés of 2010, the opera premiered in concert version in 2017. Marco, dedicated to Alfredo García, updates the myth through the main characters, supported by a chorus of madrigalists and a group Of camera.
THE LIBERATION OF RUGGIERO DALL'ISOLA D'ALCINA, FRANCESCA CACCINI
Running from June 4 to June 9, this balletto in musica , based on Ariosto's Orlando Furioso , is the first opera composed by a woman and one of the first to be performed outside Italy, debuting at the Medici court and then in Poland. The libretto demands spectacular theatrical effects and features a variety of ritornellos , ballets and vocal choruses, inspired by the famous concerti delle donne of Ferrara . Caccini, key in the lyrical genre since he was young, played Alcina in its premiere, demonstrating his multiple talents and beginning a series of operas inspired by Ariosto, continued by composers such as Rossi, Lully, Händel and Vivaldi.
MEDEA, MARC-ANTOINE CHARPENTIER
Charpentier's Medea , one of the most notable French baroque operas, runs June 6-10, starring Veronique Gens and Laurent Naouri. The work showcases the composer's skill in the genre, with vivid characters, intense emotions, and powerful vocal writing. Although initially a success, it was barely performed for almost 300 years. Like other operatic Medeas, it requires a protagonist of great vocal and theatrical caliber, highlighting a critical moment in the middle of the work where Medea invokes the furies of the underworld for her revenge.
MADAMA BUTTERFLY, GIACOMO PUCCINI
The iconic opera Madama Butterfly, running from June 30 to July 22, continues to captivate with its moving story of love, loss and betrayal. Under the direction of Damiano Michieletto, the production transports the plot to a marginal neighborhood of an oriental city, offering a contemporary look that denounces sexual tourism. With voices such as Saioa Hernández and Aleksandra Kurzak, and the musical direction of Nicola Luisotti, the work addresses current issues with the same intensity as in its premiere.
With its stunning architecture, rich history and commitment to artistic excellence, Madrid's Teatro Real continues to be a must-see destination for opera lovers around the world. This season, spectators are invited to immerse themselves in a world of emotions, passions and unforgettable melodies as the Teatro Real presents an opera season that promises to delight, thrill and inspire all those who have the privilege of witnessing it.
