With this sixth line of subsidies so far this year, there are more than 11 million euros in aid for local commerce
The City Council allocates 795,000 euros to promote entrepreneurship in municipal markets and modernize press kiosks
This call encourages the use of market premises for training activities in trades linked to commerce or hospitality and for the creation of public agri-food innovation centers

At the Government Meeting held on May 16, the City Council has approved a new public call for subsidies to encourage entrepreneurship in municipal markets and, as a novelty, carry out activities of public interest in these facilities, in addition to modernizing or replacing the kiosks. press in 2024. The amount of the aid is 795,000 euros, 300,000 euros more than the credit allocated in the previous call, with which the City Council has approved, so far this year, a total credit of 11.02 million euros in support of markets and local commerce.
The call, integrated into the Strategic Subsidy Plan of the Area of Economy, Innovation and Finance 2023-2025, offers financial support to alleviate the expenses corresponding to the occupancy rates of the premises located in the markets in order to maximize the possibilities of development and competitiveness of these municipal establishments that support life in the city, promote employment, favor territorial balance between districts and are a source of social cohesion.
Aimed at those who have started their activity in the markets since January 2020, these aid also seek to facilitate the incorporation of women into the markets, which is why they will increase by 10% for entrepreneurs and for companies formed in 51 % by women.
Key lines of action
This call regulates the bases that will govern the granting of subsidies to be granted this year by the City Council through the Area of Economy, Innovation and Finance in various lines of action. Aid relating to market premises may be requested at the municipal electronic headquarters from June 15 to July 15 and from June 15 to September 30, for kiosks.
This new line of subsidies seeks, on the one hand, to encourage entrepreneurial initiative in commercial premises in municipal markets of less than 500 square meters, improving the occupancy rate of these facilities, by paying a percentage of the rate established with a maximum limit of 1,000 euros per month and 24 monthly payments from the signing of the contract with the concessionaire entity, provided that this has been formalized after January 1, 2020.
The subsidy percentage varies depending on the location of the market, its previous level of occupancy and the activity of the premises, being higher in those in the south and east of Madrid, in those with lower occupancy and for commercial activity.
Likewise, it is intended to facilitate, by paying the corresponding fee without limit on monthly amount or area, the use of premises located within the markets for activities and uses of public interest related to training actions in trades or professions linked to the activity of markets, commerce or hospitality; the creation of public centers for agri-food and gastronomic innovation; the establishment of customer service points aimed at facilitating purchases for people over 70 years of age, vulnerable groups and home delivery, as well as the installation of libraries intended, initially, for the loan of books.
The beneficiaries of this aid will be natural or legal persons who carry out a commercial activity in a municipal market and the current occupancy rates approved by the City Council for each market will be eligible. The eligible period covers from January 1, 2020 to July 15, 2024.
Thirty thousand euros per kiosk to improve its accessibility and functionality
As a final line of action, the aim is to encourage the improvement, modernization or replacement of press kiosks, provided that they have obtained their approval after February 15, 2024, by paying a limit amount of 30,000 euros per establishment.
The holder of the public concession who has carried out improvement or replacement works after January 1, 2023 may benefit from this line and investments aimed at improving the habitability, functionality, decoration and accessibility of the kiosk will be eligible. The eligible period runs from January 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.
