WORLD CANCER DAY: A CALL FOR AWARENESS AND GLOBAL ACTION
2025/02/04

Every year on February 4 , the world comes together to commemorate World Cancer Day , an initiative promoted by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) with the aim of raising awareness and promoting prevention, early detection and treatment of this disease.

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with millions of new diagnoses each year. However, advances in research, medical technology and treatments have made it possible to improve survival rates and quality of life for patients. In this context, this year's campaign seeks to reinforce the importance of prevention and equitable access to cancer health services.

Under the motto "Closing the Care Gap", UICC highlights the existing inequalities in access to healthcare and underlines the need to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for all, regardless of their economic situation or geographical location. Organisations around the world have organised activities, conferences and information days to encourage social and governmental commitment in the fight against this disease.

Health experts point out that up to 50% of cancer cases could be prevented with healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity and the elimination of tobacco and alcohol consumption. In addition, early detection through regular check-ups remains key to improving prognoses and the effectiveness of treatments.

World Cancer Day is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of this disease and the importance of research, patient support and the promotion of public health policies that can reduce its incidence. Every action counts in the fight against cancer, and the active participation of society is essential to generate real and lasting change.
