Gallery of the Royal Collections
Gallery of the Royal Collections
The creation of the Gallery of the Royal Collections is the most important museum project of recent decades in Spain.
The Gallery is the showcase of what National Heritage means in its role as a cultural institution. .
...It exhibits a selection of the prodigious set of artistic collections gathered by the Crown over the last five centuries and which, since the Second Republic, have been the heritage of all, which represents the disappearance of the tradition of royal collecting understood as such
Here, arranged chronologically from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day, the most exquisite examples of painting, decorative arts, furniture, porcelain, glass, musical instruments, armor and tapestries are presented. Walking through its rooms allows us to understand the evolution of taste and royal collecting in parallel to the country's own history.
The Gallery was born in dialogue and as a complement to the Royal Sites and Royal Boards managed by the institution. If in those groups the collections can be admired in context, here they are arranged by reigns and thematic areas in a story that helps us understand them better.
The last sections of the museum tour explain what National Heritage is like today, in its double task of conservation and management of the cultural and natural assets it guards, and institutional support for the Head of State.
All of this is exhibited in a 20th century building that is a work of art in itself, a project that allows you to admire the pieces in dialogue with contemporary spatial language and that blends organically into the surroundings of the Royal Palace and the Field. of the Moro. Walking through its rooms also allows you to enjoy unprecedented views of the city.
National Heritage understands the Gallery as a living space and a meeting place: the exhibition will be renewed periodically and will allow newly restored pieces to be displayed; show other works on loan for temporary exhibitions or celebrate corporate events.
