El Rastro, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Community of Madrid, is the oldest and best-known street market or open-air market in Madrid
...This busy street market is held on Sundays and holidays in the Centro district of Madrid, around Plaza de Cascorro, Ribera de Curtidores, Plaza de General Vara del Rey, Mira el Río Alta, Plaza del Campillo del Mundo Nuevo and surroundings.
Documented since 1740, this market was originally a meeting place for the sale, exchange and dealing of second-hand clothes, an alternative to the business of street vendors. Its curious name may be due to the fact that, as it was held around the old slaughterhouse, the carcasses that were transported without skinning to it left a trace on the ground. Also in the 16th century Rastro was synonymous with butcher shop or skinning.
Today it welcomes the offer of more than 1000 vendors who start around nine in the morning, a day that will last until approximately 3 in the afternoon. It is located in the surroundings of the Ribera de Curtidores, with the Plaza de Cascorro as the nerve center, the market encompasses a large almost triangular block delimited by the streets of Toledo, Embajadores and Ronda de Toledo and extends through others such as San Cayetano, Fray Ceferino González, Carlos Arniches, Mira el Río or the squares of General Vara del Rey and Campillo del Mundo Nuevo.
Depending on which area we walk through, we will find different items, from handicrafts, clothing and accessories, to kitchen items, trading cards, records and second-hand magazines, pets and objects of all kinds from different ages.
Sundays and holidays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
