"DRESSING IN THE SPANISH OR FRENCH STYLE" IS THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON 18TH CENTURY FASHION IN SPAIN
2024/09/11
From 18 to 20 September , the Museo del Traje and the Museo del Prado will be the venues for a prestigious International Congress focusing on 18th-century fashion in Spain, during the time of the Habsburgs. This event will bring together around twenty experts from museums, universities and research centres in Europe and North America, who will present their research and perspectives on the fashion of that period.
Organised by the University of Navarra, the Museo del Traje and the Association of Friends of the Museo del Traje, in collaboration with the Museo del Prado, Casa Velázquez and the Spanish Society for 18th Century Studies, this conference is presented as a valuable opportunity for academics, teachers and students to present, debate and analyse how fashion influenced society, art, economy and industry during the Enlightenment in Spain.
Seventeen years have passed since Madrid held the first International Congress on Spanish fashion in the Habsburg era. Since then, interest in historical clothing has grown significantly in various academic disciplines in Spain. This new congress, which follows on from the one held in 2007, extends the analysis to the fashion of the Bourbon era, reflecting the evolution and social transformation that took place throughout the 18th century.
The main objective of this meeting is to study the diffusion of clothing trends in eighteenth-century Spain, exploring how the dresses and fashions of the period were a reflection of a society in transformation. In particular, the debate between national fashions and external influences will be examined, as well as the changes in clothing that reflected a new concept of intimacy and sociability, typical of the Rococo style.
The topics to be addressed in the lectures include the evolution of men's and women's fashion, the history and transformation of underwear, styles and forms of dress, as well as accessories such as footwear, headdresses, fans and jewellery. Aspects related to cosmetics and hygiene, and the clothing industry and marketing will also be discussed.
The conference will feature the participation of leading experts such as Dr. Aileen Ribeiro , Professor Emeritus at The Courtauld Institute of Art; Pascale Gorguet Ballesteros , Curator at the Palais Galliera , Museum of Fashion in the City of Paris; Dr. Laura Pérez Hernández , Researcher at the University of Nottingham; Dr. Catherine Lanoë , Professor at the University of Orléans; and Saga Esedín Rojo , Researcher at the Ecole du Louvre and the Complutense University of Madrid. Also participating will be Dr. Lesley Miller , Professor at the University of Glasgow; José Manuel Matilla Rodríguez , Curator at the Museo del Prado; Dr. Elisabeth Gernerd , Professor at the University of Montfort in Leicester; Dr. Denis Bruna , Curator at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris; and Anne-Cécile Moheng , Conservation Assistant at the Musée de Zadkine in Paris, among many others.
This conference not only seeks to deepen the study of 18th century fashion, but also to promote academic exchange and collaboration between researchers from different parts of the world, thus contributing to a better understanding of the history of fashion and its impact on culture and society. Registration is open and broad participation from the academic and professional community is expected.
