PHotoESPAÑA inaugurates the exhibition 'Azkarate vs. Azkarate' and the Photobook Space at Serrería Belga
Next Wednesday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m., the Serrería Belga Cultural Space will host the opening of Azkarate vs. Azkarate, one of the exhibitions in the Official Selection of PHotoESPAÑA 2026. The exhibition juxtaposes some of the most iconic photographs by San Sebastián-born photojournalist Isabel Azkarate—taken over a forty-year career—with newly created images captured with a mobile device. Past and present in dialogue, with a gaze that, as the exhibition itself demonstrates, remains as genuine and inquisitive as ever.

Curated by Silvia Omedes, the exhibition traces the career of one of the pioneering figures of photojournalism in Spain. This edition of PHotoESPAÑA also offers a reflection on how tools change, but the essence of the gaze remains. The opening ceremony will include María Santoyo, director of PHotoESPAÑA; Isabel Azkarate; curator Silvia Omedes; Roel Nieuwenkamp, ambassador of the Netherlands to Spain—the guest country of this 29th edition of the festival—; and representatives from the Madrid City Council.

The Serrería Belga Cultural Space will also host the Photobook Space, a parallel exhibition that invites visitors to explore an international selection of photography books. The event will include a guided tour of both exhibitions.
