What inspires you when designing a new interior space?

“When I enter a space for the first time, my head starts working. I have always had that ability. I believe a lot in the daily work of exercising the mind and imagination and that daily study. When I see a space, things occur to me and it is also curious, because I am not going to change again during the entire phase of the project. We could say that I have the ability to invent those spaces from the beginning.”

Is there a particular project that has challenged you creatively and is your favorite?

“Every year more complex and challenging projects come in. But my greatest work has been my house. My house in Madrid, in the historic neighborhood. Because it marked my international leap. From being a Spanish decorator well known as an antique dealer, I became part of the AList, the 100 best decorators in the world after my house in Madrid was published 15 years ago. I entered the American AList, which are two lists that are published in the United States, Elle Decor and Architectural Digest, and so far I have not left the lists. It is like let's say the group of international chosen ones that signifies you and makes you an international figure. “My house is my masterpiece.”

How do you perceive the evolution of interior design in Madrid and in Spain in general?

“The world of decoration in Spain is incredible, the change it has had in recent years. When I started 30 years ago and the press called us the "young promises" and we already had great success as those figures who were going to be important in the future, from that moment in which decoration was a very elitist thing where there was only three decorators in Madrid and very little clientele for something like the one now where it has been democratized, because we work for a large number of types of clients and we do tremendously varied works; gyms, small apartments etc. It's really not that you only dedicate yourself to great international works but that we also make works for the whole world. That means that decoration has been democratized. It has reached the whole world, there are a large number of decorators, there are a large number of styles... It is no longer a super luxury activity but rather a lot of people can really get to do very beautiful things without having excessive financial means. Spain has a very important position in decoration.”

How do you think interior design can influence people's well-being and quality of life?

"Absolutely. When we lived through the pandemic, that world that we all had to live in and that has changed us all a little as people. That's where we all realized how important the environment you live in is. About how important it is and how it affects your way of life, your way of thinking, your way of feeling on a daily basis. As Oscar Wild said - beauty gives happiness - and what greater beauty is not only how you dress, but really where you live.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out in the world of interior design and a professional friend?

“I advise students who have just finished to travel, to invest everything they have in traveling, books are also traveling, and not stop studying and training. It is very important, as Picasso said - to be modern you have had to be classic. First you have to train yourself as a person, you have to train yourself as a professional and then you will have time to train yourself with your own style, with your own signature.

To the professional my age I would say what I repeat to myself every day, which is to try to renew and reinvent yourself every day all day. Because deep down what you cannot do is stagnate.”

In short, Lorenzo Castillo is not only a master of interior design in Madrid, but also an icon in the global design industry. His dedication, unique vision and unwavering commitment to excellence continue to inspire and leave an indelible mark on the world of design.
