TCHAIKOVSKY'S “EUGENE ONEGIN” OPERA RETURNS TO THE ROYAL THEATER IN MADRID
2025/01/17

The Teatro Real presents “ Eugene Onegin ”, one of Tchaikovsky ’s most emblematic works, in a new and long-awaited production that returns to the Madrid stage after 15 years of absence.

The play, based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Pushkin , is part of a special programme celebrating the 225th anniversary of the birth of the famous Russian author.

The opera transports the viewer to 19th-century Russia to tell the story of Eugene Onegin , a young aristocrat disenchanted with life, whose impulsive decisions trigger a series of personal tragedies. Tatiana , a naive and romantic young woman, falls deeply in love with Onegin, but he rejects her love with contempt.

In parallel, Onegin provokes a duel with his friend Lensky , which culminates in the tragic death of his friend, plunging Onegin into a state of guilt and regret, while Tatiana matures and finds her own emotional strength.

The opera is notable for the brilliance of Tchaikovsky's score , which perfectly captures the emotional complexity of the characters. The melodies reflect passion, heartbreak, guilt and nostalgia.

Performances of “ Eugene Onegin ” will take place at the Teatro Real in Madrid during January and February 2025. Tickets are now available through the theater’s usual channels.
