THE REINA SOFIA PRESENTS THE FIRST RETROSPECTIVE OF HUGUETTE CALAND: A LIFE IN A FEW LINES

From February 19, the Reina Sofía Museum is hosting “ Huguette Caland. A life in a few lines ”, the first major retrospective of the Lebanese artist in Europe. The exhibition includes more than 300 drawings , paintings , sculptures , textiles and collages .

Huguette Caland challenged the aesthetic, sexual and social conventions of her time, both in her life and in her work. Her work reveals her exploration of ideas of body, gender, love, belonging, the human condition and the process of aging.

The exhibition describes the environment and relationships that Caland established both in Lebanon, Europe and the United States, which allows us to put her artistic creation as a migrant into context.

This retrospective shows the evolution of his creation and the visual languages , such as colors, shapes and bodies, that he used to create a work linked to collectivity, communication and the concept of home.
