The Prado Museum will host an exhibition that brings together, for the first time since its dispersion in 1830 , most of the works that El Greco painted between 1577 and 1579 for the Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation , the exhibition focuses on the three altarpieces from the Cistercian monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo , the most important commission received by the painter.

The complex included an altarpiece structure for the main altar, the canvases of which are currently dispersed, except for the three paintings that remain in the church.

Thanks to an agreement with the Art Institute of Chicago , the canvas of “ The Assumption of the Virgin” returns to the Museo del Prado after more than a century. The work can be visited together with elements of the side altarpiece of the church and other pieces preserved in the collection of the Museo del Prado.

From 18 February to 15 June , this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the collection in its original context . For more information, visit the Museo del Prado website.
