Madrid City Council launches a call for grants of up to 445,000 euros to revitalize municipal markets and newsstands
2026/05/28

The Madrid City Council, through its Department of Economy, Innovation, and Finance, has launched a public call for grant applications for 2026 aimed at boosting commercial activity in the city's neighborhoods. With an initial budget of €445,000, expandable by an additional €440,000, the call seeks to improve occupancy rates in municipal markets, attract activities of public interest, and continue the renovation of newsstands throughout the capital. This figure exceeds the total amount awarded in 2025, which reached €267,500.

The main change in this edition affects Line 1, which aims to incentivize entrepreneurship in market stalls by subsidizing their rent for up to 24 months. Among the most notable changes, the subsidy will be increased by 10% when the application is motivated by generational change due to the retirement of the previous owner, with the goal of preventing the closure of traditional businesses. Furthermore, the requirement that the stalls have a surface area of less than 500 m² has been eliminated, allowing larger projects to apply for a maximum amount of €1,500 per month. The Bami and Pacífico markets will also see an increase in the percentage of subsidized rent for their commercial and hospitality stalls, bringing them in line with other markets of similar occupancy.

Line 2 continues to support the establishment of activities of public interest in municipal market premises, such as libraries or specialized training centers for commerce and hospitality, with a limit of 24 months. Line 3, meanwhile, is intended for the improvement, modernization, or replacement of newsstands, with a limit of €30,000 per installation. The application period for lines 1 and 2 will be open from May 15 to June 15, while the application period for line 3 will be open from June 15 to September 30.
