CLAUDIO TOLCACHIR ADAPTS “ROAD TO MECA” IN THE FINE ARTS THEATER
2025/03/14
The Bellas Artes Theater hosts the play " Road to Mecca ," an adaptation by Argentine actor and director Claudio Tolcachir . The play was written in 1984 by South African playwright Athol Fugard and features a cast led by actress Lola Herrera , along with Natalia Dicenta and Carlos Olalla .
“ Road to Mecca ” is inspired by the life of Helen Martins , a South African artist known for transforming her home into a space filled with sculptures and art. Fugard uses her story as a basis to create a metaphor for the context of apartheid in South Africa, addressing themes of social exclusion , art , and the freedom to be oneself.
The play's plot unfolds in the home of Miss Helen , who lives isolated due to her community's lack of understanding. The arrival of Elsa , a progressive young teacher, and Marius , a religious pastor, sparks a series of profound conversations about morality, social commitment, and the right to decide about one's own life .
“ The Road to Mecca ” is an invitation to reflect on the value of being oneself in a world that demands conformity. This adaptation will be presented at the Teatro Bellas Artes from March 13 to April 27 , Tuesdays through Sundays.
