DIVERSE CHUCK. THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF DIVERSITY
2022/06/24

Its name alone evokes freedom and welcome. Chueca is much more than a neighborhood, it is a benchmark for the LGTBI+ movement throughout the world.

Here began a trend towards visibility that is now unstoppable, a way of living based on respect.

A few decades ago, bars, restaurants and different businesses began to settle in the area, such as bookstores and fashion stores, specialized in the LGTBI+ world.

Among them, some that are already a symbol, such as the Berkana bookstore, the Black & White venue, Who invited her?, Primas Bar, You and Me, among others.

His presence, at first, surprised his lifelong residents, who have been privileged witnesses of the transformation of their neighborhood into the epicenter of tolerance and modernity.

A place where you can enjoy a lifestyle free of prejudices or exclusions. The neighborhood is one of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant areas of Madrid. The Plaza de Chueca is its nerve center.

Also, the Pedro Zerolo square, which since 2015 has been named after one of the activists who worked the most in defense of the rights of the LGTBI+ community in Spain.

Avant-garde art galleries, such as Aural Galería, Galería Silk, the latest fashion stores such as Rubén Galarreta, Barei, Socks Market, international cuisine restaurants such as Angelita Madrid, Diurno, Gracias Padre, Abbasid, emblematic wine bars such as Vides , markets such as San Antón and Mercado Barceló, where gastronomy is mixed with commerce and lively terraces, such as 11 nudos terraza nordés, in the market itself, flood every street and corner here, with a hectic life, day and at night. Because the night here claims to be one of the most fun.

The surrounding areas merge their energy and vitality with the Chueca neighborhood and offer visitors a wide and diverse offer that is difficult to match. This is the case of Calle Fuencarral, the undisputed protagonist of shopping in Madrid, Malasaña, where the most emerging creators come together, and Salesas, one of the elegant neighborhoods of the capital.

Below we present the routes to enjoy CHUECA recommended by the Diverse Global association:

Route 1: “The Essentials of Chueca”

  1. Chueca Square:

This square is the heart of the LGTB neighborhood of Madrid; But why does Chueca bring together restaurants, bars and, in general, the collective atmosphere? Over time, rainbow flags flooded shops, balconies, bars, bookstores... In general, a new modern and rejuvenating air had come to stay in a neighborhood that nobody wanted to set foot in before. Thus, the people of the collective changed the neighborhood, gave it a new life, and made Chueca what it is now: a historical landmark that represents the LGBT struggle.

  1. Pedro Zerolo Square:

This well-known square is one of the epicenters of the Chueca neighborhood and a large part of the activities that take place during the Pride festivities take place here; among them, the proclamation.

  1. Fuencarral Street:

Fuencarral street joins Gran Vía street with the Chamberí neighborhood through a long stretch that is considered one of the busiest points in Madrid, since it concentrates a multitude of shops and restaurants.

  1. Hortaleza Street:

Hortaleza street is the main entrance to the Chueca neighborhood. The famous La Kama Café, the pioneering Berkana bookstore, the drag shows or the mythical Vivares restaurant and the fashion shops mean that this street never sleeps.

  1. Pelayo Street:

Calle Pelayo is the nerve center of Chueca's nightlife and a meeting point for all the LGTBI in the capital. In addition, it is one of the main streets in the neighborhood during the Madrid Pride celebration, where the popular heel race takes place every year.

  1. House of the 7 Chimneys:

Located in Plaza del Rey, it is one of the few remaining examples of civil architecture from the 16th century in Madrid. The house of the 7 chimneys is a two-story mansion with a hipped roof topped by seven chimneys.

  1. Museum of Romanticism:

The old palace of the Marqués de Matallana, built in 1776, houses an interesting collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts from the 19th century, which recreates the daily life and customs of the high bourgeoisie during Romanticism.

  1. Church of San Anton:

Also known as the Royal Church of San Antón or the Royal Church of the Pious Schools of San Antón, it is a Baroque temple that commemorates the popular festival of San Antón, in which pets are blessed.

  1. SGAE building:

The headquarters of the General Society of Authors (SGAE) is known for being one of the few clearly modernist buildings in Madrid; in fact, this emblematic building is famous for its luxurious and highly ornate exterior appearance.

  1. Madrid History Museum:

Former hospice of San Fernando, this museum exhibits one of the best samples of the historical evolution of Madrid and offers a global vision of the arts, industries, daily life and customs of its inhabitants since it was chosen as the capital of Spain in 1561 to the present day. .

  1. King's Square:

This square, which is located in the heart of the Chueca neighborhood and is named in honor of the proclamation, by the people of Madrid, in 1808, of Fernando VII as King of Spain. In the middle of the square, a statue is erected in tribute to Lieutenant Jacinto Ruiz y Mendoza, one of the leaders of the resistance during the uprising of May 2, 1808 in Madrid.
